Vigan Cityhood: Going back in the Past
Vigan city is a city from the province if Ilocos Sur in the west coast of Luzon. During the spanish colonization, Vigan served as a major trading and religious center. Because of colonization of Spaniards, Vigan was heavily influenced by spanish architectures and even cultures. And one of it is the Calle Crisologo, wherein you can see houses that are made out of limestones, capiz shells, and wood. You can also see kalesas– a mode of transportation in the past and even now.
Vigan's history really show how biguenos are so brave and mighty. Imagine being colonized by the Spaniards to being occupied by the British during the seven years' war to being a battleground for during the Philippine revolution? Thus proves that no matter what's happening or what's the situation is, Biguenos really care for Vigan City. But on December 27, 2000, President Joseph Estrada signed Republic Act No. 8988 that revalidated and recognized Vigan's city status granted by virtue of the Royal Decree of September 7, 1757, issued by Ferdinand VI, King of Spain. And on January 2001, Vigan was now recognized as a city.
Vigan's history is full of many incredible events, from spanish colonization to world war two to Vigan being recognized as a city. From architectures, traditions, cultures and even the people, we can really see how rich and incredible Vigan City is. We can not deny that we might have seen or went to go vigan a lot but for sure we all know that Vigan City have a irresistible historical charm hidden in it.
